It is a generous music. Nobody is trying to win. Georgia played that record Saturday afternoon, beat Western Kentucky seventy to twenty, and put nine different men in the end zone — the first time the program has done that since 2011.

Gunner Stockton threw five touchdown passes to five different receivers and did it all before halftime, which ties a school record that has stood a while. He went thirteen for sixteen. That is not a quarterback carving up a defense so much as a bandleader pointing at people. You. Now you. Now the big fellow in the back who has not had a turn. By the time they went to the locker room it was forty-nine to nothing and Georgia had out-gained Western Kentucky three hundred forty-three yards to sixty-three.

The two prettiest scores did not involve the offense at all. Tyriq Green ran a kickoff back ninety-one yards, then later fell on a fumble in the end zone, which is the football equivalent of the drummer getting a solo and the crowd actually liking it. Ryan Puglisi came on in relief and went seventy yards untouched. Nate Frazier added fifty-five and a score. Everyone ate.

Then it rained, and the second half got sloppy, and four fumbles hit the wet grass between the two teams. Georgia also wore all-white uniforms for the first time in the history of the program, which lasted exactly as long as the good half did. Asked afterward whether the whites would be back, Kirby Smart said, “If we play like we did in the second half, hell no.”

That is the whole man in nine words. Seventy points, a record-tying first half, nine different scorers, and the head coach walked to the microphone irritated. “It’s all rosy and dandy,” he said, “until you go on the road and you got to play somebody of SEC caliber.” He is right, and he knows he is right, and he would rather say it now in September than have somebody else say it for him in November.

A seventy-point win is a jam. The question is whether they can still play the song when it is three chords and a road crowd.

From the Notebook

NOT ON THE FIELD — Georgia played without running back Dante Dowdell, recovering from a punctured lung and broken ribs suffered in an ATV accident, and without edge rusher Amaris Williams, out since a spring knee injury.

WHAT IT COST — Smart said Stockton “took some hits today that I don’t want him to take.” No injury was reported.

THE OTHER SIDELINE — Western Kentucky lost its starting quarterback to an interception and the game to arithmetic, but Tyson Helton was not hanging his head: “One thing our young men did was they kept competing.”

Georgia scored seventy on Western Kentucky with nine different Bulldogs reaching the end zone, which is less a football game than a jam band that finally got everybody on the setlist.
