ALBANY, GA \u2014 Every record collection has a leaving song in it. This one has fifteen of them by actual count, and not one is as complicated as what is going to happen in Oxford next Saturday night, when Lane Kiffin walks back into Vaught-Hemingway Stadium wearing the other team’s colors. He spent six years building that place. Now he is the visitor in it. There is no song for that. There is barely a word for it.<\/p>\n

Both of them spent Saturday doing their homework. LSU beat Louisiana Tech forty-five to fourteen in the strangest fashion you will see a ranked team win by thirty-one. The Tigers turned the ball over four times in the first half \u2014 three Sam Leavitt interceptions, one of them run back one hundred yards for a touchdown \u2014 and still led, because Louisiana Tech in that same half gained zero net yards and did not make a first down. Not one. Then LSU scored twenty-eight straight to open the third quarter and that was the evening.<\/p>\n

Ole Miss, meanwhile, was surgical. Trinidad Chambliss completed twenty-three of twenty-six passes, which is eighty-eight percent, to nine different men, and Pete Golding’s team led Charlotte twenty-seven to nothing at the half on the way to forty-one to nine. Charlotte won the third quarter six to nothing, which is the sort of detail you only notice when there is nothing else to worry about.<\/p>\n

Up in Atlanta, Tennessee handed Georgia Tech a forty-five to twenty-four beating behind an eighteen-year-old. Faizon Brandon, making his first road start, threw two touchdowns and no interceptions, and DeSean Bishop ran for one hundred forty-seven and two scores as the Volunteers piled up two hundred ninety-nine yards on the ground. Josh Heupel, on his freshman: “The stat sheet is not going to be elite. I actually really like the way he played the game.” Cameras caught him telling the kid on the sideline, “Hey, you’re good.” Coaching is mostly that.<\/p>\n

It was not all good news in Atlanta. Georgia Tech cornerback Jaylen Mbakwe was taken off on a stretcher and to a hospital by ambulance, and defensive end Jordan Walker was carried off unable to put weight on his leg. No word on either by Saturday night. A football Saturday can be a fine thing right up until it is not, and then the scoreboard stops mattering to about forty people very quickly.<\/p>\n

LSU won by thirty-one and its coach was furious. Ole Miss won by thirty-two and nobody in Oxford was thinking about Charlotte.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

THE TURNOVER PROBLEM<\/strong> \u2014 Kiffin, after four giveaways: “We’re winning by 31 points and we’re really upset.” Ole Miss will not be as forgiving as Louisiana Tech.<\/p>\n

A THIRD OF THE STATION<\/strong> \u2014 Nine thousand five hundred of this library’s thirty-four thousand tracks are jam band, which is roughly the share of Saturday that was worth sitting through twice.<\/p>\n
