Ray Charles was born right here in Albany 96 years ago today, Bruce Springsteen turns 77, and the Allman Brothers' Idlewild South marks another year \u2014 plus new music news from Neil Young and the Boss himself.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Some dates on the calendar just sound better than others, and September 23 might be the most musical day of the year for those of us in south Georgia. On this day in 1930, Ray Charles Robinson was born right here in Albany, Georgia. Ninety-six years later, Brother Ray's fingerprints are still on just about everything we play \u2014 soul, country, R&B, rock and roll. He blended them all before anybody thought you were allowed to.<\/p>\n

September 23 is also the Boss's birthday. Bruce Springsteen, born in Long Branch, New Jersey in 1949, turns 77 today \u2014 and he's not exactly slowing down. Earlier this month, a new concert film from his Land of Hope and Dreams tour with the E Street Band arrived on streaming, captured in Philadelphia during this spring's run of shows. And in a recent Rolling Stone interview, Springsteen said he's working on a couple of new records \u2014 one already finished, though he's holding it back because another batch of material feels like it should come out first. Seventy-seven years old and sitting on more new music than he can release. That's the Boss.<\/p>\n

Closer to home, today marks the anniversary of the Allman Brothers Band's Idlewild South, released September 23, 1970. The Macon boys' second album gave us "Midnight Rider" and "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" \u2014 songs that helped define Southern rock and still sound like a Georgia two-lane at dusk.<\/p>\n

The date keeps giving. On September 23, 1977, Steely Dan released Aja, the band's biggest commercial success, and David Bowie put out the single "Heroes." Billy Joel's The Nylon Curtain \u2014 one of the first albums ever digitally recorded, mixed, and mastered \u2014 arrived on this day in 1982. Back in 1968, the Beatles began recording "Happiness Is a Warm Gun" for the White Album. And in 1969, a college newspaper at Northern Illinois University published the story that launched the infamous "Paul is dead" rumor. Paul, for the record, remains very much alive.<\/p>\n

Looking ahead, September is shaping up as a reissue-heavy month for classic rock fans, with Thin Lizzy's 1974 album Nightlife getting a limited orange-vinyl pressing for National Album Day. On the new-music side, Neil Young is releasing Second Song, his latest collaboration with the Chrome Hearts, following last year's Talkin to the Trees. Whatever the calendar says, the good stuff keeps coming \u2014 and we'll keep playing it.<\/p>\n
