Georgia beat Oklahoma 41\u201313, and by Sunday morning Kirby Smart sounded like a man who had lost.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Some Southern football coaches can win going away and still walk into the press room looking like the bank just took the truck. Kirby Smart is the best living example. Georgia beat Oklahoma 41\u201313 on Saturday in front of 93,033 at Sanford Stadium and moved to 4-0. By Sunday morning, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported, Smart was talking about alarm bells. When most of us hear an alarm bell, we roll over. When Kirby hears one, he schedules extra film.<\/p>\n

His complaint was the second half, and it was a fair one. The Journal-Constitution reported that in the third quarter the Bulldogs had more turnovers than first downs. That's a line you expect in the box score of the team that lost. Smart said Georgia didn't play to its standard, and he warned that being "happy with where you are" is an alarm bell for the games ahead. Coaches say that sort of thing every week, but this week he had the evidence to back it up.<\/p>\n

The scoreboard looked so friendly mostly because of linebacker Chris Cole, who spent the afternoon cleaning up after John Mateer like a man following a leaky feed truck. The Associated Press reported that Cole recovered both of Mateer's lost fumbles. He ran the first one back 85 yards for a touchdown that made it 21-0. He returned the second, which Raylen Wilson forced, 23 yards to set up a Chauncey Bowens touchdown run. That's the kind of day that gets a linebacker free lunch in Athens for a month.<\/p>\n

He had help. Safety KJ Bolden intercepted a pass and safety Rasean Dinkins recovered a fumble, and the university's athletic department counted 137 return yards on four takeaways. Smart was honest about what that meant. "Oklahoma helped us a lot," he told reporters, Yahoo Sports reported, and the math backs him up, because 17 Georgia points came off those four Sooner turnovers. The win stretched Georgia's streak against unranked opponents to 52 games. But a coach who knows where his points came from also knows they won't always arrive gift-wrapped.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, down in Gainesville, somebody woke up the lizards. No. 21 Florida beat No. 4 Ole Miss 52\u201328 in The Swamp, WRUF reported. It was the Gators' first win over a top-five opponent since 2018, and it put them at 4-0 for the first time since 2019. Jadan Baugh carried 29 times for 142 yards and three touchdowns, and Duke Clark added 126 yards on 12 carries. Somewhere in Athens, a fellow who swears he never checks Florida's score has checked it twice.<\/p>\n
