Good morning, friends. Pour yourself another cup, because Tuesday, September 29 has a good bit of rock and roll history attached to it, and there's fresh music and radio news to go with it.<\/p>\n

Let's start with a Michigan original. On this date in 1973, Grand Funk Railroad's "We're an American Band" hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. If you've ever sung along to it with the windows down on a two-lane road, you know it still works 53 years later. Also on this day: in 1956 Bill Haley had five singles in the UK Top 30 at the same time, "Rock Around the Clock" and "See You Later Alligator" among them. In 1979 the Police earned their first UK No. 1 with "Message in a Bottle." And in 1997 the Rolling Stones released Bridges to Babylon, their 21st studio album.<\/p>\n

Speaking of Michigan, Bob Seger fans have something new to spin. Capitol\/UMe released an expanded 20th-anniversary edition of Seger's 2006 album Face the Promise on September 18. It adds four bonus tracks: "Time," "Little Jane," "Red Eye to Memphis" and "Let Me Try." All four were newly remastered by longtime Seger mastering engineer Robert Vosgien. The vinyl version comes in a gatefold jacket with a 12-page LP-sized booklet. Kid Rock is still there on "Real Mean Bottle," and so is Patty Loveless on "The Answer's in the Question."<\/p>\n

Last Friday, September 25, brought a busy day for new releases. Europe, the Swedish band behind "The Final Countdown," put out a new studio album called Come This Madness. For collectors, there's an expanded 60th-anniversary reissue of Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention's Freak Out!, King Crimson's Islands with new 2026 Steven Wilson remixes, and a T. Rex set covering 1974 to 1977.<\/p>\n

Now to our side of the dial. Earlier this month the U.S. House passed the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act on a voice vote. The bill would require AM radio as standard equipment in all new vehicles sold in this country, electric models included. It now goes to the Senate. Broadcasters say AM is an important source of emergency information, especially in rural areas when storms come through. Anyone who has ridden out a hurricane season down here knows why that matters. Automakers and tech groups have argued the mandate would raise costs and complicate electric vehicle design.<\/p>\n

One more date for your calendar: FEMA and the FCC have scheduled the first nationwide Emergency Alert System test since October 2023. It's set for November 17 at 2:20 p.m. Eastern, with December 3 as the backup date. If your radio makes a strange noise that afternoon, don't worry. It's only a test.<\/p>\n

In other radio news, Westwood One ended its long-running network newscast America in the Morning on September 18, after 42 years on the air.<\/p>\n
