Those memories have a way of showing up uninvited when the Commodores keep a game close. Series history

Call it an old Dawg’s football flashback.

The record book says Georgia has owned this series, and recent years have included some outright blowouts. I know that. But a comfortable series lead does not erase the afternoons that made you suspicious of the words “just Vanderbilt.”

Saturday gave those memories something to work with.

Nobody told Vanderbilt about the party

There is a dubious honor in being somebody else’s homecoming opponent. It usually means the host has arranged the flowers and decided you will supply the happy ending.

Vanderbilt apparently missed that part of Georgia’s invitation.

With backup quarterback Blaze Berlowitz starting in place of Jared Curtis, the Commodores came to Athens and made themselves a first-half problem. Georgia led just 21–14 at the break. This did not feel like another afternoon when we could put our feet up before halftime. Quarterback report

Then came a little Luckie fortune. Lawson Luckie collected a tipped Stockton pass and turned it into a 43-yard gain, helping set up the touchdown that gave Georgia breathing room. Sometimes momentum arrives with a perfect spiral. Sometimes it arrives after everybody’s heart stops for a second. Game report

Stockton’s touchdown pass to Elyiss Williams made it 28–14 with 8:21 left in the third quarter. Georgia added ten more points in the fourth and finished with a 38–14 win. The final margin looked comfortable. Getting there felt considerably less so. Scoring and statistics

Moneyball: execution calmed the nerves

The numbers explain why Georgia eventually pulled away.

Stockton completed 25 of 32 passes for 295 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. Georgia outgained Vanderbilt 471–293, doubled its first downs 26–13 and converted seven of ten third downs without committing a turnover.

That is the overarching offensive fact for me: Georgia kept drives alive without giving the ball away.

Our Moneyball play-by-play analysis adds another layer: by the standard success-rate test, Georgia succeeded on 57.6% of its snaps, compared with Vanderbilt’s 34.0%. These come from the official play-by-play, not film grades, but they describe a substantial efficiency advantage.

The running game deserves a little honesty, too. Georgia finished with 176 rushing yards, but Bo Walker’s late 59-yarder supplied a third of them. The other 33 attempts produced 117 yards—about 3.5 a carry. Good finish; not an afternoon of effortless rushing dominance.

And the defensive headline needs no advanced formula: Vanderbilt scored nothing after halftime. Georgia won the second half 17–0.

You can be pleased with that response without pretending the first half never happened.

Dad would have loved these Dawgs

My dad would have truly loved this year’s Bulldogs.

They remind me of those Alabama teams in the middle of Nick Saban’s great run, when fans could spend halftime complaining that their team wasn’t winning by enough. That is a remarkable standard to reach—and an easy one to get spoiled by.

I still think these Dawgs have a chance to stand with the best Georgia teams I’ve watched, including our national champions. That is my belief, not a trophy they have already earned.

Vanderbilt reminded us that reputation doesn’t finish a football game. Georgia’s response reminded us why there is so much to like about this team.

Now comes Tuscaloosa on October 10. Alabama looked awfully good to me today, and next Saturday will tell us much more about how far this Georgia team can go. Georgia schedule

For now, I’ll take the win, appreciate the second-half shutout and let those old Vanderbilt memories settle down.

Have a good weekend, and Go Dawgs!

— The Godfather

Sources

Series history

Quarterback report

Game report

Scoring and statistics

Georgia schedule

Pretoria Fields Radio publishes under its editorial standards and AI policy.
