Pour another cup of coffee and settle in, because the first weekend of October brought plenty from the rock and roll world.

We'll start with a legend. Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi received an MBE at Windsor Castle this week. The man who handed heavy metal its riffs is also back with new music: he's released a single called "Stormwatcher," and his new solo album, From the Dark, arrives October 23. It has eight new songs plus two bonus tracks that were released earlier.

Now to New Jersey, where Dave Grohl got up with AC/DC at MetLife Stadium and played "Highway to Hell" with them. Out in Las Vegas, Metallica have opened their residency at the Sphere. It runs through March 2027 on two-night "No Repeat Weekends," so no song is played twice across the pair of shows. On night two they pulled out a song they hadn't played in nearly 20 years.

There's tour news for your calendar too. Greta Van Fleet announced a 59-city Into the Beginning tour across North America and Europe that starts February 3, 2027. Their new album, Palace for the People, comes out this Friday, October 9. Slash, with Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators, also announced a new album, Flying Blind, along with world tour dates for 2027. And the Rolling Stones have a new video for "Mr Charm," starring actor Alexander Skarsgård.

If you dig through the record bins, October is a good month for it. The Beatles' Rubber Soul is out now as a remixed, expanded reissue, alongside a 50th-anniversary edition of Rush's 2112. Foreigner's Head Games gets an expanded box set on October 23, and The Who's Who by Numbers follows with a super deluxe set on October 30.

For the country and Americana fans, Miranda Lambert's Crisco and Wynonna's The Hard Truth came out Friday, along with a 20th-anniversary edition of The Chicks' Taking the Long Way. Coming up on October 9 are John Prine's Found Dogs, an archival release that includes new songs, and Todd Snider's My Second Rodeo. David Allan Coe's posthumous album A Million Reasons arrives October 16. Brothers Osborne bring Watertown on October 23, and Kaitlin Butts closes the month with Hello, Honky Tonk on October 30.

Over in the radio business, Radio Ink's October issue is all about the people who keep local radio going. That includes a one-man operation, KELY-AM in Ely, Nevada. Here at Pretoria Fields Radio, we know that feeling.

Finally, a look back. On this day in 1969, Creedence Clearwater Revival went to number one on the album chart with Green River. On this same day in 1970, we lost Janis Joplin at just 27. Today, we'll play one for each of them. Thanks for listening, south Georgia.

— The Pretoria Fields Radio news desk

Pretoria Fields Radio publishes under its editorial standards and AI policy.
