Pour that second cup of coffee and settle in. October 6 carries a lot of weight on the classic rock calendar, and some fine new music is headed our way before the week is out.

We'll start in 1969, when the Beatles released a double A-side single that paired George Harrison's "Something" with John Lennon's "Come Together." It was the first Beatles A-side to feature a Harrison song, and it's hard to think of a better debut. Five years later, in 1974, King Crimson put out "Red." It was heavier than anything they'd made before, and the critics took to it even if the charts didn't.

Today we also remember two legends. Eddie Van Halen passed away on this date in 2020. He made finger-tapping famous, and every kid with a guitar and a bedroom amp tried to copy him. One year earlier, in 2019, we lost Ginger Baker, co-founder of Cream, at age 80. His mix of rock and jazz drumming changed what a rock drummer could be. Turn it up a little louder for both of them today.

Now for what's new. Sheryl Crow's 12th studio album, "Pick You Up," arrives digitally this Friday, October 9, with vinyl to follow November 20. She wrote the seven songs with her longtime collaborator Jeff Trott, and the lead single, "Freedom Bus," features Jesse Welles. Also on Friday, Paul Simon releases "The Quiet Celebration Concert," a two-CD companion to his concert film, recorded at a 2025 stop in Seattle.

Mark your calendars for the rest of the month, too. On October 16, Richard Thompson brings us "Hippies, Thugs and Heroes" and Bruce Cockburn releases "The Blood of Others." The same day, Rick Wakeman of Yes follows up 2020's "The Red Planet" with "Return to the Red Planet." It features Mollie Marriott, daughter of the late Small Faces and Humble Pie frontman Steve Marriott. On October 23, the Doors open the vault for "Unbound and Dangerous," live material from their 1970 tour behind "Morrison Hotel." And on October 30, Foghat deliver "Live and Loud Across the U.S.A.," recorded at their 2024 and 2025 concerts.

Finally, a word for the folks behind the microphone. The Radio Hall of Fame inducts its class of 2026 this Thursday, October 8. The eight honorees are Boomer Esiason, Dennis Green, Shotgun Tom Kelly, Helen Little, iHeartMedia chief Bob Pittman, Rickey Smiley, Charlie Van Dyke and Fred Winston. Six of them were chosen in a vote of more than 950 radio professionals. The trade press is also telling the story of Wyatt Cox, the only employee at KELY-AM in Ely, Nevada, who is winding down a 50-year career serving his town. It's a good reminder of what local radio is for, and we're proud to be your neighbors here at Pretoria Fields Radio.

That's the news. Stay tuned, and keep it right here.

— The Pretoria Fields Radio news desk

Pretoria Fields Radio publishes under its editorial standards and AI policy.
