It works out to 8.2 percent. Across 2023, 2024 and 2025 combined, the figure was 243 of 1,419, or 17.1 percent. Five games in, the Bulldogs are getting stuffed about half as often as they were over the previous three seasons.

Five games is a small sample, and the station’s numbers allow for that: the likely range for this year’s stuff rate runs from 4.7 to 13.7 percent. Even the top of that range sits below the bottom of the baseline’s range, which starts at 15.3. September doesn’t produce many signals clearer than that.

Georgia is 5-0 and plays at Alabama on Saturday at Bryant-Denny Stadium, 7:30 p.m. Eastern on ABC. Here’s what the numbers show first.

The findings

1. Nobody runs on this defense. Five opponents have 287 rushing yards combined. That’s 57.4 a game at 1.91 yards a carry. Tennessee State managed 10. Arkansas managed 17. (College stats count sacks as runs, so Georgia’s 13 sacks pull that number down. Even so.) Opponents have noticed: 936 of the 1,223 yards Georgia has allowed came through the air, or 76.5 percent. Opponents average 5.71 yards per pass and 1.91 per rush. Shutting down the run has pushed teams to throw.

2. Third down is a mismatch. The offense has converted 28 of 51 (54.9 percent). The defense has allowed 25 of 74 (33.8 percent). The one off day is worth noting. Against Oklahoma the offense went 3 of 12, its worst showing. The defense answered by allowing 2 of 14, its best.

3. The ball keeps coming back. Ten takeaways against four giveaways, a margin of plus-six. Eight of the ten came in two games, four each against Western Kentucky and Oklahoma. Georgia also turned it over twice in each of those games, though, so the margin has come more from steady small wins than from big swings. Georgia has finished even or ahead in turnovers in all five games.

4. Gunner Stockton completes three of every four. He is 77 of 102, or 75.5 percent, for 1,049 yards, 10.3 yards an attempt, 13 touchdowns and one interception.

The trend: the gap is closing

Take Georgia’s yards per play and subtract the opponent’s. By game, the gap reads 9.12, 5.18, 2.53, 1.48 and 1.39. It has shrunk every week. The offense has gone from 11.0 yards a play in the opener to 7.14 against Vanderbilt. Meanwhile the defense has gone from allowing 1.88 to allowing 5.75, the most any opponent has managed this season. The scoring margins follow the same path: 60, 50, 28, 28, 24.

So on paper, the margin is slipping. From the opener to Vanderbilt it fell by 7.7 yards a play. But the schedule changed too: two non-conference home games, then three SEC games. Across just the SEC games the margin went 2.53, 1.48, 1.39, a drop of a little over a yard a play in three weeks, and the drop between the last two was small. It has also stayed positive every week. Georgia’s Pythagorean expectation, the record its scoring margin predicts, is 4.8 wins in five games. The record is not hiding anything.

The offensive line

These are unit-level measures built from public play-by-play, not grades for individual linemen. Each is compared with Georgia’s 2023 to 2025 seasons combined, not with last season alone.

Stuff rate: 8.2 percent (12 of 147) against 17.1 percent. The ranges don’t overlap. This one is real.

Line yards per carry: 3.85 (range 3.42 to 4.28) against 3.21 (range 3.06 to 3.36). The ranges don’t overlap, though only by six-hundredths of a yard. Probably real.

Power success: 13 of 16 short-yardage runs converted, 81.3 percent, against 76.3 percent (116 of 152). This year’s range runs from 57.0 to 93.4 percent. Sixteen snaps can’t tell us much yet, so call it unknown.

Sack rate allowed: 5 sacks on 140 dropbacks, 3.6 percent, against 3.5 percent. Unchanged.

One more figure: runs beyond 10 yards are earning 2.59 yards per carry from that part of the run, up from 1.08. That mostly credits the backs, not the line, and its range is wide.

What to watch Saturday

The stuff rate against the best front so far. If it climbs back toward 17 percent, some of the 8.2 came from soft opponents.

Whether Saturday looks like the Oklahoma game. That’s the only game Georgia averaged under six yards a play (5.77) and the only one it converted fewer than four third downs (3 of 12). The defense carried that day.

The pass defense. Arkansas threw for 283 yards, the most against Georgia this season. Opponents throw because running hasn’t worked.

A note on the data

All five games are in the station’s compiled numbers, and none is flagged as provisional. Early-season samples are small and the opponent list is uneven: Tennessee State, Western Kentucky, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Vanderbilt. Read the ranges as well as the headline numbers.

— The RFA Sports Desk

Sources

Sports Illustrated: Georgia 2026 football schedule officially released

Atlanta Journal-Constitution: TV network, game time announced for Georgia at Alabama

Saturday Down South: The 3 most critical games on Georgia's 2026 schedule

Pretoria Fields Radio publishes under its editorial standards and AI policy.
