Georgia Sent the Dawgs. — The Godfather"/>
Radio Free Albany title card

There are two forecasts Southern people need this weekend: where the hurricane is going and whether Georgia can beat Alabama.

One involves rapidly changing conditions, nervous television experts and people buying supplies they probably don’t need.

The other is the weather.

Isaias has put an unwelcome complication into Georgia–Alabama weekend. We ordered a Saturday-night football game, not a visiting weather system with its own press coverage.

The hope is that the worst weather moves through Tuscaloosa before the football does. That is a hope, not a reservation confirmation. Hurricanes are notoriously difficult to get on the phone.

WE’VE HEARD SOME OF THESE NAMES BEFORE

Camille hit Mississippi’s coast as a Category 5 in 1969. Michael hit the Florida Panhandle as a Category 5 in 2018 and brought destruction into southwest Georgia. Different storms, different paths, same lesson: “We live inland” is not a weather plan.

Around here, Michael permanently changed the meaning of “a few limbs down.”

Those storms belong in the history books, not in a prediction that this weekend will repeat them. But they explain why Southerners can discuss generators, ice and offensive-line protection in one uninterrupted conversation.

Then there’s Katrina—the New Orleans–Tuscaloosa connection. People driven from New Orleans and the Gulf Coast scattered in many directions, and Tuscaloosa took in evacuees. Alabama asked fans to surrender hotel rooms. That was genuine hospitality.

Not everybody ran to Tuscaloosa. It just sounds that way once an Alabama fan starts telling the story.

This weekend, Georgia fans have a different reason to head there. Apparently, a hurricane forecast wasn’t enough uncertainty. We wanted third-and-eight in Bryant-Denny, too.

MONEYBALL BROUGHT A CALCULATOR TO THE PARTY

The forecast package behind our original article ran this matchup 100,000 times, with a weather adjustment, and came back with a typical score of Alabama 25, Georgia 24.

One hundred thousand games, and the computer still couldn’t give us a relaxing Saturday.

That’s a model, not a prophecy. It also didn’t account for your lucky shirt, although we cannot recommend submitting the shirt as statistical evidence.

Georgia’s assignment is straightforward: make Alabama work for its rushing yards, keep third downs manageable, finish drives with touchdowns and hang on to the football.

Especially that last one. A wet football has the personality of a greased watermelon and absolutely no loyalty to your university.

We don’t need Gunner Stockton to defeat Alabama and the atmosphere on the same play. Take what’s there. Move the chains. Let the defense make somebody else miserable.

SOUTH GEORGIA’S PARTY PLAN

If the weather keeps us home, the den becomes the stadium. The cooler is stocked, the radio is ready, and somebody will explain the entire offensive problem before the first commercial.

Follow the actual weather alerts, keep generators outside and skip flooded roads. The hurricane party is a stay-safe gathering—not an audition for the Weather Channel.

Then, if conditions allow, settle in and enjoy the game.

Here’s the hopeful forecast: the storm moves along, everybody gets through safely, the lights stay on, and Georgia gives us something worth hollering about.

Cold beer. Dry socks. A charged radio.

And, preferably, one more Georgia touchdown than the computer ordered.

Go Dawgs.

— The Godfather

Sources

Camille — National Weather Service

Michael — National Weather Service

Alabama Athletics: UA football fans asked to make room for evacuees (Sept. 2, 2005)

Sports Illustrated: Forecast improves for Alabama-Georgia (James Spann)

National Weather Service Tallahassee: Albany forecast and watches

RFA Sports Desk: Hurricane Party (forecast package and game numbers)

Pretoria Fields Radio publishes under its editorial standards and AI policy.
