Read on down the card, though, and you find the part nobody in Gainesville is bragging on. That same defense allows the worst opponent passing success rate in the league, 50.6 percent, and has picked off four passes all year. The Gators have built themselves a fine front porch with a mean dog on it. They just forgot to lock the back door.

Which is a shame for them, because Georgia's receivers have turned out to be the surprise of the fall. DawgNation's bye-week grades gave the wideouts an A after they spent all of August as the most doubted unit on the roster. Gunner Stockton threw for 272 yards and two touchdowns against Auburn on 22 of 34, with two interceptions he would rather you forgot. Georgia's athletic department said Thursday that Lawson Luckie has 11 catches for 184 yards and two scores, better than 16 yards a grab, on an offense leading the SEC at 43 points a game. Luckie also made the semifinal list for the Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year, which is a nice thing to carry into a rivalry week.

The Gators have built themselves a fine front porch with a mean dog on it. They just forgot to lock the back door.

The catch, and there is always a catch, is that a man cannot throw to an open receiver while lying on his back. Florida sacked Arch Manning five times at Texas. Georgia gave up two to Auburn, and the sack rate allowed has climbed from 2.6 percent in 2023 to 4.0 percent this year. So Saturday is a simple argument about time. Florida's secondary is the invitation. Florida's front is the bouncer. Whether Stockton gets the ball out before the bouncer gets to him is the entire column, written in about three seconds a snap.

History says Georgia, and says it loudly. Covers has the series at 58 wins to 44 for Georgia, Kirby Smart at 8 and 1 against Florida since his second season, and the last four meetings going 24-20, 34-20, 43-20 and 42-20. But look closer, because Florida has covered in three of those four. The books have Georgia by 12 and a half with a total of 53 and a half. The Georgia Moneyball model calls it Georgia 30, Florida 21, wins it 70 percent of the time, and covers that number in only 41.7 percent of its simulations. The Gators lose these games thoroughly and still manage to make the margin look respectable.

And it all happens in Atlanta, under a roof, for the first time since 1995 that this game has left Jacksonville, about 70 miles from Athens and neutral only on the paperwork. If the Bulldogs are tempted to get comfortable, they might glance at Saturday's wreckage. Number 2 BYU lost to UCF 39-31 in double overtime, Texas Tech fell at Cincinnati 37-24, and Michigan scored six points in losing to Indiana in overtime, leaving three undefeated teams in all of major college football. Georgia sits No. 3 in both polls without having played. A soft secondary across the line is a gift. The weekend was a reminder that gifts get returned.

The Notebook

FIVE DAYS: Georgia and Florida kick off Saturday at 3:30 Eastern on ABC at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Georgia is favored by 12.5 with the total at 53.5, and the roof means no weather in the forecast or the model.

THE WEEKEND'S CARNAGE: UCF beat No. 2 BYU 39-31 in two overtimes for its first win over a top-five team, and Texas held on 34-27 over Ole Miss after blowing a 21-point lead. BYU dropped to No. 8 and Texas Tech slid to No. 13 after Cincinnati got them 37-24.

THE COIN FLIPS: The desk calls two games on the Saturday slate true coin flips: the Desert Cats at the Red Raider Riders with Texas Tech laying 3.5 at noon, and the Salt Flat Utes at the Queen City Bearcats with Utah giving 6.5 at 3:45 Eastern.

Written in the tradition of Lewis Grizzard, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, 1946–1994.

Hear the desk read tonights report on Radio Free Albany, WPFQ 96.7.

Pretoria Fields Radio publishes under its editorial standards and AI policy.
