Georgia's athletic department reminds us the two have met there since 1933, with the lone exception of 1994 and 1995, when the Gator Bowl was being torn up to suit the NFL's new Jaguars. Now the same stadium, under a newer name, is being torn up again, so the party moves to Atlanta on Saturday and to Tampa next year. Jacksonville, it seems, cannot pour concrete without sending the family to stay with cousins.

This one splits the tickets down the middle, a novelty for a game whose crowd has always drawn its own line at the fifty. Jon Sumrall, the Florida coach, told reporters Monday that Atlanta is not necessarily his team's backyard, and called the even split a unique deal he finds exciting for his players, 247Sports reported. Drew Bobo, Georgia's fifth-year offensive lineman, allowed Monday that Jacksonville is a special place but they cannot play there this year, and said the fifty-fifty split in the Benz will be pretty cool. Athens is about seventy miles up the road. Gainesville is not.

Jacksonville, it seems, cannot pour concrete without sending the family to stay with cousins.

Kirby Smart declined to be charmed by the building. "Obviously, the venue has changed," he told reporters Monday. "I don't think that matters much to the teams playing in it." What does matter to him is the collision. Georgia spent the open week trying to get a beat-up roster well, and Smart admitted he worries that a team that spends two weeks getting healthy had better be ready to strike somebody, because this one is going to be physical. He saved his warmest words for Buster Faulkner, who runs Florida's offense and once worked for him, calling him one of the best offensive minds in the country and a close friend.

The bookkeeping favors Georgia, though less than the reputations do. Georgia is 6-1 and third in the Associated Press poll, according to its own game notes; Florida is 5-2 and seventeenth. DraftKings makes Georgia a 12.5-point favorite with a total of 53.5. The Georgia Moneyball model calls it 30-21 Georgia and gives the Bulldogs the win in seventy sims of a hundred, but covers that number in only 41.7 percent of them, which is the model's polite way of saying take the win and leave the spread alone. Sports Illustrated notes Florida's defense ranks 118th in expected points per play, the soft spot in a hard team.

The rest of the country used Georgia's quiet Saturday to argue that nobody is safe anywhere. UCF beat second-ranked BYU 39-31 in two overtimes, the first top-five win in that program's history. Cincinnati handled eighth-ranked Texas Tech 37-24. South Carolina stuffed Tennessee on fourth-and-one and beat the eleventh-ranked Volunteers 27-24 on a field goal as the clock died. And Texas held off seventh-ranked Ole Miss 34-27, which bears watching in Athens, because Georgia's athletic department announced Monday the Bulldogs go to Oxford on November 7 for a 7:30 kickoff on ABC. Neutral field or not, Saturday is still a day the other team gets to show up.

The Notebook

FOUR DAYS: Georgia and Florida, Saturday at 3:30 p.m. Eastern on ABC at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, indoors, so the weather can mind its own business. The first SEC availability report is due Wednesday.

GATOR HEALTH: Sumrall said Monday that receiver Vernell Brown III practiced fully after missing two games with a knee strain and looks normal to him. Both quarterbacks, Aaron Philo and Tramell Jones Jr., practiced, and he still has not named a starter.

ELSEWHERE SATURDAY: Fighting Irishmen versus Navy Midshipmen at noon Eastern, Notre Dame by 30.5, a lock. Buckeye Nuts at Trojan Horsemen at 7:30, Ohio State by 6.5, a coin flip.

Written in the tradition of Lewis Grizzard, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, 1946–1994.

Hear the desk read tonights report on Radio Free Albany, WPFQ 96.7.

Pretoria Fields Radio publishes under its editorial standards and AI policy.
