Somebody in Gainesville would say something about Athens, somebody in Athens would say something about the Gators' mamas, and by Thursday it was on a T-shirt being sold out of a trunk near the Jacksonville beaches. Well, the game has moved to Atlanta, and apparently the manners came with it. Dawgs Central counted up the four Georgia players who have talked this week and reported that not one of them gave Florida a single word worth taping to a locker. It is Tuesday and nobody has said anything ugly. I am not sure what to do with my hands.

Talyn Taylor, the sophomore receiver, stayed home hurt for last year's game and told reporters Tuesday that watching it from the couch was no fun at all, which is how we'll put it on the radio. Then he was asked about Florida's cornerbacks, and he called them patient and experienced, which is the kind of thing you say about a judge. Raylen Wilson, the senior linebacker who grew up in Tallahassee, got asked whether he'd miss the Jacksonville scene, the pageantry and all that. He considered it and said, "Uh, no, not really." That is the entire quote. I have had longer conversations at a tollbooth.

It is Tuesday and nobody has said anything ugly, and I am not sure what to do with my hands.

Jon Sumrall is in his first Georgia-Florida week as a head coach, and DawgNation reported he spent Monday taking the high road at a brisk walk. He said that when he turns on Georgia's tape, you don't see weakness. He said the team is embodied in its quarterback and called Gunner Stockton a tough, competitive winner. He admired the weight room. He credited Kirby Smart's eleven years of building a roster in layers. Now, I have seen coaches butter up an opponent before, usually right before they try to run the ball down his throat. But nobody makes a man mention the weight room. That is a coach who has watched the film and would like a little sympathy before kickoff.

Kirby answered in kind. Smart told reporters Monday that Florida's offensive coordinator, Buster Faulkner, is "one of the best offensive minds in the country," and of the Gators he said, "They play really hard." Then, almost in passing, in the middle of an answer about scripting practice reps, he let slip the one sentence of the week that was not a compliment: that he has less depth than he has ever had. He said it on the eve of Georgia's athletic department announcing Tuesday that KJ Bolden is one of fifteen semifinalists for the Jim Thorpe Award, given to the best defensive back in the country, while the coach still cannot say whether the man will play. The compliments are flying both directions. The honest sentence was the quiet one.

The bookmakers have no manners at all. Georgia is favored by twelve and a half, the same number it has been since summer, with the total at 53.5. Our Moneyball model is more polite than the bookmakers: Georgia 30, Florida 21, the Bulldogs winning seven times in ten but covering that number only about four times in ten. Covers' preview took Georgia anyway and noted that Florida's defense gives up 34.2 points a game in league play and ranks 125th in the country in success rate, which is a statistic with no manners either. Kirby has won eight of the last nine of these. Georgia leads the series 58-44-2, going back to a 52-0 game in Macon in 1904, which may still be the rudest thing anyone has said in this rivalry.

So there we are. Four days out, the loudest thing either team has said is a compliment, the quietest thing is a worry, and the game is in a building with a roof, so the weather can't get a word in either. Somebody is going to say something before Saturday. It is Georgia-Florida; it is in the rules. But if the week ends with everybody still this nice, I would watch the kickoff closely, because in my experience the politest man at the table is usually the one holding the cards.

The Notebook

FOUR DAYS: Georgia and Florida, Saturday at 3:30 p.m. Eastern on ABC at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, indoors.
