Saturday in Atlanta the ledger flipped. Georgia took the ball away from Florida four times, gave it up once, and turned the takeaways into 17 of its 27 points. "We avoided turnovers for the most part, and we got turnovers," Smart told reporters afterward, and then added that the Dogs didn't beat the Dogs today. In this league that is about as close to a sermon as a coach will preach, and a sellout congregation of 72,541 heard every word of it.

The play folks will still be talking about at church came with 29 seconds left in the half. Quintavius Johnson got to Florida quarterback Tramell Jones Jr. and knocked the ball loose, and linebacker Chris Cole scooped it up and ran 66 yards the other way. It was Cole's second defensive touchdown of the season, after an 85-yarder against Oklahoma, which suggests the man has a nose for loose change. Smart called it a 14-point swing. Florida had the ball in the final minute with a chance to make it a game. Instead the Gators went to the locker room down 24 to nothing and spent the rest of the afternoon looking for their wallet.

Georgia, by comparison, spent the afternoon in a rocking chair. Nobody in the top five had less to apologize for.

The man most content with the arrangement was Gunner Stockton. He threw for 101 yards, his lowest total of the year according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, which counted drops by Craig Dandridge and London Humphreys among the reasons. He also threw it to the other team exactly zero times, two weeks after three giveaways against Auburn. Stockton told the paper he did not care one bit about the yardage so long as Georgia won. Georgia's athletic department called the offense effective but unspectacular, 318 yards and 4.9 a play, which is the grade your daddy gave you for mowing the yard without running over the hose.

Demello Jones, who had one interception and a second erased by a roughing-the-passer flag, was not content at all. "We're trying to be No. 1 in the country in turnovers," he said after the game, and figured the defense still needed more. Georgia's athletic department puts the count at seven interceptions and seven fumble recoveries through eight games, a fine haul for a unit that could not get its hands on anything against Auburn. The one worry: Ellis Robinson IV left in the first half with a knee that tightened up. Smart said nothing was structurally wrong, though he admitted he honestly did not know what it was.

Around the country the top of the poll had a rougher Saturday than Georgia did. No. 2 Ohio State, starting a freshman quarterback with Julian Sayin hurt, lost to unranked Southern Cal, 30 to 18. No. 1 Miami needed two penalty flags on two North Carolina onside kicks to get out of Chapel Hill with a 38 to 35 win, and No. 4 Indiana had to answer a 60-yard field goal with one of its own before beating Minnesota in overtime. Georgia, by comparison, spent the afternoon in a rocking chair. Nobody in the top five had less to apologize for.

It will not last. Saturday night Georgia goes to Oxford, where Ole Miss just ran over Auburn 45 to 15 and where the Rebels beat Georgia 39 to 34 a year ago. Trinidad Chambliss has thrown a touchdown pass in 21 straight games, and the early line has Georgia by three, which the desk's model calls a coin flip. Smart, asked how important Saturday was after the Auburn loss, declined to rank it. "It's just as important as it's going to be next week," he told reporters. "They're all important. That's what we learned." A man who learns that lesson in October tends to still be playing in January.

The Notebook

SATURDAY NIGHT IN OXFORD: Georgia at Ole Miss, 7:30 Eastern on ABC. Georgia opens as a three-point favorite, and the desk's model calls it a coin flip.

ELSEWHERE: Unranked Iowa State beat No. 24 Oklahoma State 51 to 49 on Kyle Konrardy's 34-yard field goal as time expired. Aidan Flora ran for 221 yards, which is a lot of yards to run on a Saturday.

THE STREAK: Georgia has beaten Florida six straight times and is 9-2 against the Gators under Smart. Florida's lone fourth-quarter touchdown kept its NCAA-record streak of games with points alive, which is the sort of thing you brag about on the bus ride home.

Written in the tradition of Lewis Grizzard, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, 1946–1994.

Hear the desk read tonights report on Radio Free Albany, WPFQ 96.7.

Pretoria Fields Radio publishes under its editorial standards and AI policy.
