According to Georgia's athletic department, his answer was two words: "Staying healthy." Dawg Post reported he went on to say Georgia has fewer people to practice with than it has ever had, and that the work gets poured on fewer bodies, which is how bodies get hurt. The SEC's first availability report of the week is due today, Wednesday, and we will learn whose names are on it.

This is not a new worry for him. Saturday night in Atlanta, with Florida still packing up, Smart told reporters, "Everybody's practicing less, but everybody's getting injured more, and it doesn't make sense." He said he figured depth would show up as the season wore on, and Dawg Post reported he believes walk-ons already on campus ought to be allowed to help. Think about that a minute. A man who has never once wanted for recruits is now counting helmets like a small-town athletic director in August.

A man who has never once wanted for recruits is now counting helmets like a small-town athletic director in August.

The names so far are more reassuring than the speech. 247Sports reported Smart said cornerback Ellis Robinson IV, whose knee tightened up against Florida, "looked good," with nothing structural found, and that he hopes he will be good to go. Running back Dwight Phillips Jr. got his ankle taped and is, in Smart's words, more tired than hurt. Nate Frazier, asked Monday about himself, said his focus was "really just getting healthy." Kyron Jones and his lower leg, along with Isiah Canion, Chauncey Bowens and Thomas Blackshear, have gone without a public update since Florida week. Today's report should fix that.

Ole Miss has its own empty lockers. Leading rusher Kewan Lacy is out with a separated shoulder, and The Rebel Walk reported Pete Golding confirmed Monday that linebacker Tony Mitchell is no longer with the program after team-rule violations, while linebacker Luke Ferrelli has been playing on a bad ankle and gave way to Tah'j Butler against Auburn. Both sides are short-handed. The difference is where they are standing. The Rebels are 5-0 at home this season and, DawgNation noted, have won 16 straight in Vaught-Hemingway. Nobody in Oxford needs a full roster to make noise.

The money is not sure what to make of any of it. Sports Illustrated's betting desk reported DraftKings now has Georgia as a 3.5-point favorite with the total at 56.5, and its man Peter Dewey took Ole Miss and the points, trusting Chambliss for the big play. The desk's own opponent-adjusted rating calls it Ole Miss by about a point in Oxford, which is a coin flip wearing a tie. The Playoff committee, meanwhile, put Georgia at No. 2 behind unanimous No. 1 Miami on Tuesday night and Ole Miss at No. 10. Top-ten by their reckoning, even-money by everybody else's.

If Smart wanted evidence for his sermon, last weekend handed it to him. Ohio State went to Los Angeles without its injured quarterback, started a true freshman, lost to unranked USC 30 to 18 and fell to No. 11. Indiana needed a seventh-year backup to win in overtime, Indiana 23, Minnesota 16. Miami survived at North Carolina, 38 to 35, with its composure in question before Notre Dame. In November, the team with the most healthy people tends to be the one still standing. Kirby knows it, and he would rather you did not count his.

The Notebook

THE COUNTDOWN: Three days to Oxford. Georgia and Ole Miss kick off Saturday, November 7, at 7:30 p.m. Eastern on ABC, clear skies and cool air in the forecast.

THE SLATE: Miami at Notre Dame is the other Saturday night headliner, Irish by 5.5, a coin flip. The desk's lone lock is Texas Tech by 17.5 over West Virginia, kicking off late enough to need coffee.

A ROSE FOR SINKWICH: Georgia's athletic department said Frank Sinkwich, the Bulldogs' first Heisman winner, will be inducted into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame, honored at the Playoff quarterfinal in Pasadena on New Year's Day.

Written in the tradition of Lewis Grizzard, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, 1946–1994.

Hear the desk read tonights report on Radio Free Albany, WPFQ 96.7.

Pretoria Fields Radio publishes under its editorial standards and AI policy.
