Ole Miss has won sixteen straight games at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, the longest home streak going in the Power Four. Sixteen teams have driven into Oxford with a plan, and sixteen have driven out with a story about how loud it got. Pete Golding said the crowd of Rebel fans and students makes it extremely tough to play, and he was not bragging. He was explaining the terms. Georgia arrives Saturday night as a three-point favorite, which is the bookmakers' polite way of saying every streak ends sometime.

The Rebels are two different football teams depending on the mailing address. At home they are five and oh. On the road they are one and two, and those two losses are the only games this season in which Ole Miss ran for 128 yards or fewer while the other fellow ran for more than 200. Florida did it with 302 on the ground. Texas did it with 207. Georgia, you may recall, ran it forty-one designed times for 217 yards against Florida on Saturday. The recipe is not a secret. The trouble is that nobody has managed to cook it in Oxford.

The whole argument, in other words, is the address.

Georgia, for its part, has been better away from home than in it. The Bulldogs are two and oh on the road, having won at Arkansas and at Alabama, and one and oh on neutral ground after Atlanta. The lone loss came at home, to Auburn. That makes the desk's opponent-adjusted rating interesting rather than decisive. On a neutral field it has Georgia at plus 31.3 and Ole Miss at plus 29.7, Georgia by 1.6. Give the home team the customary two and a half points and it flips to Ole Miss by about one. The whole argument, in other words, is the address.

The market has not budged off Georgia by three and a total of 56 and a half since the line opened Sunday. Kalshi's traders put Georgia at 59 percent. ESPN's computer says 55 and a half. Nobody has the Bulldogs by a touchdown, and nobody has the Rebels favored except the desk's own arithmetic, and only once it accounts for the zip code. Kirby Smart did not need a model to tell him. He told reporters Monday the challenge this week is to go on the road and play in, his words, 'an atmosphere that's extremely hard to play in.' Georgia lost there 28-10 two years ago, so he has the receipts.

Nate Frazier was a freshman for that one. Asked Monday what he remembers about the atmosphere in Oxford, he said, 'I know my freshman year was crazy,' and then declined to say another word about the past, which is how they teach it in Athens. He did allow that night games are more fun, that you hear the crowd more and the lights do something to a player. FootballScoop calls Saturday an elimination game for the Rebels and a No. 1 seed audition for Georgia, with the committee's first ballot showing Georgia second and Ole Miss tenth. Sixteen straight is a fine thing to carry into a game like that. It is also a fine thing to lose.

The Notebook

WEST COAST WRECKAGE: Unranked USC beat No. 2 Ohio State 30-18 at the Coliseum, holding the Buckeyes without a touchdown for the first 57 minutes and dropping them to No. 11 in the AP poll. Indiana needed a 60-yard field goal as time expired and an overtime stop to get past Minnesota 23-16.

THE COUNTDOWN: Three days to Oxford. Georgia and Ole Miss kick off Saturday, November 7, at 7:30 p.m. Eastern on ABC, clear skies and cool air in the forecast. Miami at Notre Dame is the other Saturday night headliner, Irish by 5.5, a coin flip.

A ROSE FOR SINKWICH: Georgia's athletic department said Frank Sinkwich, the Bulldogs' first Heisman winner, will be inducted into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame and honored at the Playoff quarterfinal in Pasadena on New Year's Day. He scored Georgia's only touchdown in the 1943 Rose Bowl on two sprained ankles.

Written in the tradition of Lewis Grizzard, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, 1946–1994.

Hear the desk read tonights report on Radio Free Albany, WPFQ 96.7.

Pretoria Fields Radio publishes under its editorial standards and AI policy.
