And yet once an offense gets inside the twenty, Georgia lets it score 88.2 percent of the time, which ranks 100th nationally. It is a house with a ten-foot fence and no lock on the back door. Nobody gets in the yard, but the ones who do help themselves to the refrigerator.

The trouble is that Ole Miss has been living in other people's kitchens all fall. The Rebels score on 96.8 percent of their red-zone trips, third in the country, and Trinidad Chambliss has thrown a touchdown pass in twenty-one straight games. Kirby Smart told reporters Monday that Ole Miss probably has the best quarterback in the country. Their line has allowed fewer than one sack a game, so a collapsing pocket is not something Chambliss has had to think about much. If Ole Miss reaches the twenty Saturday night, their history says they are coming away with points, and Georgia's says it will let them.

It is a house with a ten-foot fence and no lock on the back door.

Georgia's answer, as best I can tell, is to keep them from getting there in the first place. Elijah Griffin told reporters Tuesday the defensive line has to keep Chambliss in the trap and push the pocket, and that everything else will take care of itself. The desk's press file notes both Ole Miss losses came in games where the Rebels were out-rushed by a wide margin, and Georgia just ran for 217 yards on Florida while holding the Gators to 54. The plan, in plain English, is to hold the ball yourself and make the other fellow drive the long way around.

The Wednesday availability report did not make the red zone any safer. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported the SEC's first report of the week listed tight end Elyiss Williams, linebacker AJ Kruah and defensive lineman Joseph Jonah-Ajonye as questionable, while Ellis Robinson, who left the Florida game with a bad knee, was not on it at all and is good to go. Ole Miss has nine men out and lists Keaton Thomas, its leading tackler, as questionable, and The Rebel Walk reported Pete Golding says linebacker Luke Ferrelli has been nursing an ankle for a while. Goal-line stands are made by linebackers, and both sides are counting theirs.

The committee's first ballot came out this week with Georgia second behind Miami and Ole Miss tenth, which sounds comfortable until you look at how the top got there. Miami beat North Carolina 38 to 35, and only after two Carolina onside-kick recoveries were wiped out by penalties, and Ohio State lost 30 to 18 at USC without its starting quarterback and fell out of the top ten. The bookmakers have Georgia by three, the desk's own rating has it a point either way, and Sports Illustrated's betting desk took Ole Miss and the points. Kickoff is Saturday at 7:30 Eastern on ABC, clear skies and the fifties.

The Notebook

THE COUNTDOWN: Two days to Oxford. Georgia at Ole Miss, Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Eastern on ABC, Georgia favored by three with the total at 56.5.

OUT WEST: Iowa State beat Oklahoma State 51 to 49 on a field goal as time expired, 53 seconds after the Cowboys had taken the lead. Indiana needed a 60-yard field goal and overtime to get past Minnesota, 23 to 16.

THE SLATE: Pachyderms at Bayou Bengals, LSU by 6 at 3:30. Coral Gables Hurricanes at the Fighting Irishmen, Notre Dame by 7 at 7:30. The desk calls the first a coin flip and the second leaning, and neither a lock.

Written in the tradition of Lewis Grizzard, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, 1946–1994.

Hear the desk read tonights report on Radio Free Albany, WPFQ 96.7.

Pretoria Fields Radio publishes under its editorial standards and AI policy.
