Asked what the program's biggest challenge is right now, he told reporters, "Staying healthy," and went on to say, as Sic 'Em Dawgs reported, that Georgia has fewer scholarship players than it has ever had and has pared back practice to protect the ones left. Then Thursday night the Southeastern Conference put out its availability report, and it turned out the thin team in this game is wearing red and blue. Ole Miss listed nine players out. Georgia listed one. A man who has been fretting about his roster all week just found out the other fellow's is held together with tape.

The Rebel Walk ran down the Ole Miss list, and it reads like a depth chart with the middle torn out. Running back Kewan Lacy, still out with the separated shoulder. Three wide receivers, Izaiah Hartrup, Kervin Johnson Jr. and Samari Reed. Three safeties, Edwin Joseph, Gerald Lacy Jr. and Nascar McCoy. A linebacker and an offensive lineman besides. Defensive end Kam Franklin and leading tackler Keaton Thomas are questionable. Georgia's lone scratch, DawgNation reported, is outside linebacker Amaris Williams, though the Bulldogs added three questionable names of their own Thursday, including tight end Elyiss Williams. Chauncey Bowens remains questionable and has not played since Vanderbilt.

Kirby spent the week worrying he had too few players, and it turns out he was looking at the wrong roster.

The good news for Georgia came by omission. Cornerback Ellis Robinson IV, who left the Florida game with a knee that tightened up, has not appeared on either of this week's reports, and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution says he is expected to play. Isiah Canion was cleared outright. That matters because the Georgia secondary draws the hardest assignment on the field. Smart told reporters Monday that Ole Miss probably has the best quarterback in the country, and Trinidad Chambliss has thrown a touchdown pass in twenty-one straight games. He will be doing it Saturday with three of his wideouts in street clothes, which is more than a Georgia defense usually gets handed.

Buck Belue, on 680 The Fan, spent his preview warning Glenn Schumann off the blitz. Chambliss, he said, is elite against extra rushers, and sending them with man coverage behind is how you lose a game you were winning. Elijah Griffin put the defensive line's version more plainly Tuesday: "Ultimately, as a defensive line, we just got to keep him in the trap, push the pocket." That is the whole evening in a sentence. A reporter put it to Griffin that Ole Miss has allowed only five sacks all year. Georgia's answer is not to chase the man but to fence him, and trust that a receiver corps missing three bodies runs out of places to go.

On the other side of the ball, Pete Golding has been talking all week about one thing. Georgia ran it forty-one times for 217 yards on Florida, and Golding told reporters Monday, in a transcript The Rebel Walk published, "If you can't stop the run versus those guys it's a long night." He called Gunner Stockton an elite game manager who does not press, which is coaching for a compliment and a dare at once. Both Ole Miss losses this season came when the other team ran for 200 and more. Now the Rebels line up against that offense with three safeties out and their leading tackler listed questionable.

The bookmakers have it close and the desk has it closer. BetMGM lists Georgia at 3.5, the total at 56.5. ESPN's power index gives Georgia fifty-five and a half percent, the Kalshi crowd fifty-nine. The desk's own opponent-adjusted rating, which does not care who is hurt, calls it Ole Miss by about a point in Oxford. Clear skies, mid-fifties, barely a breath of wind at 7:30 Eastern on ABC. Nobody honest has Georgia by a touchdown. But Kirby spent the week worrying he had too few players, and it turns out he was looking at the wrong roster.

The Notebook

SATURDAY'S OTHER BIG ONE: Miami at Notre Dame kicks at 7:30 Eastern, the same window as Georgia. The desk has the Irish by 7.5 and calls it a lean, not a lock.

LAST WEEKEND NATIONALLY: Top-ranked Miami needed a fourth-down touchdown with 7:49 left to escape North Carolina 38-35, and USC beat Ohio State 30-18 with the Buckeyes starting a true freshman at quarterback. Ohio State fell from No. 2 to No. 11.

COUNTDOWN: One day. Kickoff 7:30 Eastern on ABC from Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. Forecast is clear, 54 to 56 degrees, with a four-mile-an-hour wind.

Written in the tradition of Lewis Grizzard, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, 1946–1994.

Hear the desk read tonights report on Radio Free Albany, WPFQ 96.7.

Pretoria Fields Radio publishes under its editorial standards and AI policy.
