The Last Man Back Is Doubtful

Written by on October 16, 2026

GEORGIA MONEYBALL — Friday, October 16, 2026

Georgia's All-American safety KJ Bolden went from healthy to doubtful in a day, and the timing is bad, because Auburn is bringing a quarterback who would rather run than throw.

Every Friday before a home game, somebody in Athens checks the injury report the way my aunt used to check the obituaries, hoping not to recognize a name. This week, a name turned up that nobody expected. DawgNation reported that KJ Bolden, Georgia's All-American safety, was a surprise addition to Wednesday night's report with a right leg injury. On Thursday he was moved from questionable to doubtful. When a name goes from nowhere to doubtful in a day, you can pretty well expect a man in a headset on the sideline Saturday.

Bolden is not a man you replace by pointing at the bench. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that he has 22 stops this season, fourth-most on the team, and is one of four Georgia players with an interception. He plays free safety, which is the football equivalent of the fellow who locks up the church after everybody else has gone home. When everything in front of him goes wrong, he is the last thing standing between a ball carrier and the end zone. Tyriq Green, another defensive back, is already listed out.

He plays free safety, which is the football equivalent of the fellow who locks up the church after everybody else has gone home.

That would matter less against a quarterback who stays in the pocket. Byrum Brown does not. UGA Wire has him with 344 rushing yards this season to go with 1,055 passing, and he carried 19 times for 107 yards at Tennessee. He has also thrown seven interceptions, and those are exactly the kind of mistakes a ballhawking free safety exists to collect. Kirby Smart has already noted, with some feeling, that Auburn is coming off an off week, while Georgia is coming off a really tough game. Rested legs and a scrambling quarterback make a long afternoon for a backup safety.

The bookmakers have not lost any sleep over it. DraftKings moved Georgia from 19.5 to 20.5 back on Monday, before anybody had heard of a sore leg, and the moneyline sits at Georgia minus 1,450. ESPN's Football Power Index gives Georgia a 90.3 percent chance. The desk's own Moneyball model, which has no term for opponent strength and should be read as a floor rather than a pick, says Georgia 30, Auburn 20, with a 73 percent win chance. It has Georgia covering about one time in four.

So here is the final word before kickoff. Georgia has beaten Auburn nine straight times, counting the 2017 SEC Championship Game, and the weather service is calling for sunshine and about 70 degrees at Sanford Stadium. Kickoff is 3:30 on ESPN. Nate Frazier is off the injury report, which, as Yahoo Sports pointed out, was also true before Alabama, and he still did not play. The lesson this week is that the injury report tells you less than you would like. Keep an eye on number one's backup at free safety. That's who Auburn will be looking for.

The Notebook

  • RED RIVER AFTERSHOCK: Oklahoma 27, Texas 24, on Tate Sandell's 47-yard field goal on the final play. It was the Sooners' first win over a No. 1 team since 2007, and Texas dropped to No. 7.
  • LEXINGTON LUNACY: Kentucky 35, LSU 34 in overtime, won on a 2-point conversion by QB Minchey. Kentucky became the first FBS team to win back-to-back overtime games by one point.
  • ALSO SATURDAY: The desk calls Miami at minus 21.5 over the Tallahassee Tomahawks a lock at 7 p.m. Ohio State at Indiana, noon, is a coin flip at minus 3.5.
