GEORGIA MONEYBALL — Tuesday, October 20, 2026

Georgia lost at the gun, Florida won in Austin, and the number on the Atlanta game has not moved an inch.

ALBANY, GA — · By the RFA Sports Desk

Here is what happened last week, for those of you who were out of the county. Georgia lost to Auburn, 27-24, on a field goal as time expired. Florida, which nobody had invited to the party, went to Austin and beat No. 7 Texas. The people in Las Vegas, who know more than you and I put together, looked at all of that and did nothing at all. VegasInsider reported Tuesday that Georgia is a 12.5-point favorite over Florida for the Atlanta meeting, opening and current, with the total at 53.5. That is the same number DraftKings put up back in the summer.

If you squint, something did move. The moneyline went from Georgia minus 500 to minus 550, and Florida from plus 380 to plus 410. Out of bookmaker talk and into English, that means the folks putting up real money looked at a Georgia team coming off a loss and liked it more, not less. Every barbershop in South Georgia has a fellow who will tell you the money is smarter than the talk. Every one of those barbershops also has a fellow in the next chair who believed that right up until he had to sell his bass boat.

Georgia lost, Florida won at Texas, and the number didn't budge. The folks putting up real money looked at a Georgia team coming off a loss and liked it more, not less.

It is a curious vote of confidence, because Florida did not do a small thing in Austin. The Gators trailed 17-3 and scored the last 24 points. Freshman Tramell Jones Jr. made his first career start at quarterback, and Jadan Baugh ran for 91 yards and the go-ahead touchdown. Fox Sports noted it was Jon Sumrall's second win over a top-10 SEC team in his first season. Texas has now lost two in a row, and Steve Sarkisian says he will evaluate everything. Florida climbed back into the AP poll at No. 20. The spread stayed right where it was.

The machines are not as sure as the bettors. The Georgia Moneyball simulation has it Georgia 30, Florida 21, with Georgia winning 70 percent of the time but covering the 12.5 in only 41.7 percent of the runs. ESPN's FPI is more generous and gives Georgia an 82.7 percent chance. So everybody agrees on who ought to win, and the desk's own computer argues about by how much. Both teams are 4-2 against the spread, which tells you that neither one has made a habit of doing what the oddsmakers expected. Our computer's projection comes in short of the line, and the desk, for once, is siding with the computer.

What the line cannot price yet is who will be standing up on the 31st. Safety KJ Bolden missed Auburn with a right-leg injury, and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution notes the open week is his window to get back. Chauncey Bowens missed Auburn too. Kirby Smart told reporters Gunner Stockton's scare was a shoulder stinger and that he was cleared of a concussion. Sumrall has not named a starter between Jones and Aaron Philo, who is working his way back from a shoulder injury. Florida's first availability report is due Wednesday the 28th. Until then the number is a guess dressed up in a nice suit.

Smart said heading into the bye, "I need more players to play winning football," and that he needs more people up front he can count on. On Monday he got one, sort of. Rocky Top Insider reported that Christian Mays, rated the No. 1 JUCO defensive lineman by 247Sports and Rivals, dropped his Tennessee commitment for Georgia after an official visit to Athens. He is six-foot-five and 340 pounds, and he will not help one bit in eleven days. What Smart needs by Halloween are the players he already has, healthy and in uniform, and no oddsmaker in America can tell you whether he'll get them.

The Notebook

  • BUCKEYES SURVIVE, BARELY: No. 1 Ohio State won 19-15 at Indiana and ended the Hoosiers' 22-game winning streak, but quarterback Julian Sayin hurt his throwing arm and is expected to miss several weeks.
  • ROCKY TOP, ROCKY DAY IN TUSCALOOSA: Tennessee beat Alabama 26-10 behind 159 rushing yards from DeSean Bishop, and the Tide fell to No. 13.
  • ONE SECOND SHORT: BYU beat Notre Dame 28-24, and the Big 12 admitted one second should have gone back on the clock with the Irish at the 8-yard line.
