Kirby Smart Is Selling the Brand, and Vegas Isn’t Buying

Written by on October 9, 2026

GEORGIA MONEYBALL — Friday, October 9, 2026

Kirby Smart called the trip to Tuscaloosa a brand game, and by Friday the betting line had quietly changed sides.

ALBANY, GA — · By the RFA Sports Desk

Kirby Smart went on with Pat McAfee this week and called Saturday's trip to Tuscaloosa "a brand game, for both teams' brand." Back home, brand meant what you put on a cow so the fellow down the road couldn't claim her. Now it means what a marketing department frets about over expensive coffee. Either way, Kirby is right. This one goes on the hide. He also left Georgia's injury report exactly as he found it, which tells you as much as a coach ever tells anybody the week of Alabama.

Here is what has the coffee shops talking. When the line opened, FanDuel had Georgia as a 1.5-point favorite. It has since walked across the street, and Alabama is now the one laying a point and a half. That is about as close to a coin flip as the gambling business allows. Still, it means somebody with real money looked at both brands this week and decided the one with the elephant on it had the shine. I don't take betting advice from Las Vegas, but I do notice when it changes its mind.

Branding is a hot iron and a hard hold, and nobody gets to choose which side of it they end up on.

You can see what spooked them. Alabama just ran Mississippi State out of its own perfect season, 56-23, and one account credits quarterback Keelon Russell with 10 touchdown passes and 970 yards over his last three games. Smart called the Tide "a much improved team and extremely physical team," and coaches never say that about a team they plan to blow out. Gunner Stockton has 13 touchdown passes against one interception, though, and Smart's tip on Russell was dry as a church fan: "He doesn't run unless he has to."

Then there is the part of the ledger the bettors may have skipped. Alabama lists three linebackers as out: Justin Hill, Desmond Umeozulu and Cayden Jones. Defensive back Nick Sherman and defensive lineman Jeremiah Beaman are out with them, and tight end Josh Ford is questionable after surgery on his arm. Kalen DeBoer said, "We're optimistic," which is what coaches say right up until they aren't. Meanwhile, Nate Frazier is off Georgia's injury report with 211 yards and five touchdowns on 26 carries. A short linebacker room against a back who's healthy again is no place I'd want to stand.

So the brand gets tested Saturday at 7:30 Eastern, under lights that have seen more than their share of Georgia heartbreak. Left tackle Earnest Greene said he still has a sour taste from the 2024 trip and added, "you come to Georgia for games like this against guys like this." That's the right attitude. Branding is a hot iron and a hard hold, and nobody gets to choose which side of it they end up on. Somebody leaves Tuscaloosa marked. I'd rather it be the other fellow.

The Notebook

  • MEANWHILE IN GAINESVILLE: Missouri beat Florida 45-17, and Florida's perfect record went with it. Jadan Baugh, the early Heisman talk, was held to 13 yards on 12 carries.
  • ACC SHAKEUP: Miami beat Clemson 41-13 to take sole possession of first in the ACC. Clemson had come in as a 17.5-point home underdog, the largest spread of the Dabo Swinney era.
  • ON THE MACHINE: Held-out next-play accuracy sits at 54.4%. If a man tells you he knows what Georgia will run on third down in Tuscaloosa, check your wallet.
