Pick a Quarterback, Any Quarterback

GEORGIA MONEYBALL — Sunday, October 18, 2026

Jon Sumrall has two quarterbacks and no plans to say which one is coming to Atlanta, which suits Florida fine and leaves Georgia guessing.

ALBANY, GA — · By the RFA Sports Desk

Jon Sumrall has the kind of problem a football coach complains about in public and celebrates in private. He has two quarterbacks, and after Saturday's win in Austin he told reporters he believes Florida can win with either one. Aaron Philo, the starter, has a shoulder that Sumrall calls a "couple week deal." Tramell Jones Jr., the freshman, just made his first career start and left Texas with a 27-24 win. Georgia plays Florida in thirteen days, and nobody in Athens knows which quarterback to study.

Jones did not win it by himself. The ESPN box score has him 22 of 35 for 155 yards, plus 10 carries for 41. That line won't keep a defensive coordinator up at night. But 247Sports reported he went five-for-five on third downs in the second half, and that will. Florida came back from 17-3 down, held Texas to 272 yards and sacked Arch Manning five times. A freshman doesn't have to be brilliant when the people around him play like that. He only has to stay out of the way, and he did.

A coach with two quarterbacks and no injury report is worth a point or two all by himself.

Philo is the other half of the riddle. Sumrall said Philo has to show "zip" and throw on the move before he gets the job back, and Sports Illustrated reported that Florida will give no injury updates during its own open week. So Kirby Smart has to prepare for two different quarterbacks, a veteran's arm or a freshman's legs, and Florida doesn't have to tell him which until kickoff. Sumrall also sounded hopeful that Vernell Brown III, who has missed three straight games with a knee injury, will be back for Georgia.

Whichever quarterback Florida sends out, Georgia's real worry is the pass rush that made the freshman's afternoon so comfortable. Five sacks of Arch Manning is not luck. Georgia is allowing sacks on 4.0 percent of dropbacks this season, up from 2.6 percent in 2023, and Gunner Stockton was checked for a concussion against Auburn before he returned. Smart said, "He's had that before." That is a fine thing to say in October. It would be a better thing not to have to say again on Halloween in a dome.

The numbers still like Georgia, just not as much as the reputations do. The Georgia Moneyball model has it Georgia 30, Florida 21, a Georgia win in 70 percent of regulation simulations. ESPN's FPI is warmer at 82.7 percent. Covers' matchup page lists Georgia by 12.5 with a total of 53.5. That's the same number DraftKings hung over the summer, before Auburn and before Austin. The desk would be surprised if the real opener comes in that high. A coach with two quarterbacks and no injury report is worth a point or two all by himself.

The Notebook

  • THE GAME EVERYBODY'S ARGUING ABOUT: No. 8 BYU won 28-24 at No. 2 Notre Dame as a 10.5-point underdog when Bear Bachmeier threw a 6-yard touchdown pass with 1:47 left. The Big 12 later admitted an officiating error at the end, saying Notre Dame should have had one second left.
  • ROCKY TOP, ROUND TWO: Tennessee, fresh off a 26-10 win over Alabama, is laying 1.5 at South Carolina on the slate. The desk calls it a coin flip.
  • THE COUNTDOWN: Thirteen days to Georgia and Florida, Saturday, October 31, at 3:30 on ABC. It's at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the first time since 1995 the game hasn't been played in Jacksonville.
